Foss volunteers: Rita and Colette |
Increasingly, studies are showing that volunteering increases the volunteer’s physical, mental and emotional wellness, as well as the recipient of their attention. Community members spend their time and energy without pay for a variety of reasons. Nursing home volunteers usually choose this setting because they recognize the wealth of experience the elderly have to share and want to have interesting cross-generational friendships. Volunteers at Foss frequently say they get back double what they give. Student volunteers who come to fulfill community service requirements or to gain exposure to seniors often change their preconceptions about people in nursing homes. They are inspired to continue such relationships in the future.
The Foss Volunteer Program furthers the mission of providing quality care to residents by helping expand the participation of residents’ enjoyment of activities and provide more opportunities for socialization. In addition, volunteers’ involvement in fund raising events and mailings increase our means to keep improving the environment and supply particular needs to enhance the lives of residents.
Individuals and groups, small children with a parent, and pets with their owners are welcome to join the Foss Volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator matches prospective volunteers with the opportunity which best fits the volunteer’s interests, talents, abilities and time availability. Regular time commitments range from one hour a month to one or more a week. Groups often come in for 2-3 hours once or twice a year. A commitment of at least 16-20 hours is preferred for school-required service.
If any of our volunteer positions sparks your interest or you have another special gift to share with Foss residents and staff, please contact Marlene Obie, Volunteer Coordinator at (206-834-2586) or mobie@fosscare.org.
